1. Marks and lines - Drawing from memory

The next two tasks required a simple man-made object that has interesting spaces or holes such as a colander or open-weave basket. I opted for a cheese grater.

This was a timed task. I had 2 minutes to observe the object and, once removed from sight, I had a further 5 minutes to draw the object from memory.

I find these timed exercises quite hard. I start to panic that I’m not going to finish in time and then I worry I’m going to quickly and not producing the best work I’m capable of.

This representation of a grater is quite naive with wobbly lines and exaggerated angles and perspectives, but I think it is still readable.

I utilised the (semi) confident line work, rather than drawing feathery ghost lines, which I think gives the object a bit of character and presence on the page.
