OCA Makers Session - See, Look, Observe

This blog post is a bit late, as the session took place in May.

Diana Ali, a tutor at the OCA as well as an artist, curator and many other creative endeavours, set up a zoom session to encourage OCA students to come together and get creative without the pressures of it being marked and to try and give students a feeling of working together in a studio (which of course is something that remote learners don’t often get the chance to experience)

In this session, we reflected on what it is to:

See: perceive visually and discern or deduce after reflection

Look: to direct our gaze at something in a specific direction

Observe: register something of significance and to remark

We went on to use these in practice (picture one) and then to subvert these types of perception (picture two) and finally to use a combination of perceptions or the inverse of these perceptions to create a piece (picture three) that shows objects that don’t go together.

It was great to be working in a virtual studio environment and to feel part of a collaborative learning experience. I felt inspired by the other creators at the session and really pushed myself out of my comfort zone by experimenting with different mediums, different paper sizes and attempting to more free with my mark making.

It was good to have a chance to break free from the structured assignments and to be encouraged to experiment and make mistakes without any kind of judgement or restrictions.

Really helpful and productive session.
